Below is the assignment for writing and literature for the co-op after Christmas.
Note, you will need your copy of the WEAL book. Please order ASAP if you have not done so. You should have ISBN info on which edition to get, but let me know if you have any questions.
Assignment:
Full assignment for Irving, Longfellow, and Poe
Due Co-op 9
January, 15, 2025
1. Read literature anthology listed on syllabus: Irving (make special note in your anthology of any wit/humor in Irving’s writing…be ready to share an example in class), Longfellow, and Poe. ALSO: please PRINT the Poe and Longfellow short poems and bring to class. No need to print the longer works.
2. Re-read/skim WEAL ch. 3 and ch. 4 (or your WEAL edition’s corresponding sections on analyzing fiction and poetry). Be sure to write your assignments below with the info from these chapters in mind (and be ready for an easy quiz/assessment over the material in class).
3. Select one element of fiction and create a question to apply to one of the short stories. Answer your question in 1-2 solid paragraphs (first-year students) or approximately 1 page (returning students).
Sample short story questions (feel free to use one of these or create your own. If you create your own, please e-mail it to me for approval):
*Is the main character in the “Cask of A” static or dynamic? i.e. does he change throughout the story?
*How does Irving use literary devices of humor (irony, hyperbole, etc.) in his stories? (I mentioned to note his humor as you read.)
*How does Poe use foreshadowing in the “Cask of A”?
4. Select one element of poetry and create a question to apply to Longfellow or Poe. Same lengths as above.
Sample poetry questions (feel free to use one of these or create your own):
*How does Poe’s diction (word choice) affect “The Raven”?
*What do you think is the overall tone/feel of “The Bells”? Why?
*Contrast the various bells in “The Bells.” How does Poe accomplish the contrast?
*How does the meter and rhyme of “The Village Blacksmith” support the theme?
